Queens Park Rangers (QPR) have officially completed the signing of Ghanaian forward Kwame Poku from Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee, strengthening their attacking options ahead of the new EFL Championship season.
The 23-year-old winger turned down interest from several clubs to join the West London side, citing the club’s long-term vision and development project as key reasons for his decision.
Kwame Poku Chooses QPR Project
Speaking after completing his move, Poku explained why QPR stood out among his options.
“I feel like the project they’re building here excites me and I want to be part of taking QPR to that next level,” he said.
“There are good players here and I think it’s exciting times for the club.”
Head Coach Julien Stéphan Key to Transfer Decision
New QPR head coach Julien Stéphan played a major role in convincing Poku to make the move.
“When I was speaking to him, he talked about where he sees me fitting in and how I can influence the game,” Poku revealed.
“That’s what really attracted me. I’m 23, turning 24, so I want to come in and make my mark from the jump.”
From Colchester United to Peterborough United
Kwame Poku began his professional career at Colchester United, where he played between 2019 and 2021 before securing a move to Peterborough United.
Reflecting on his journey through the English leagues, the Ghana international believes those years were essential to his development.
“It was a journey that needed to happen to get me to this stage,” he said.
“It was about resilience, showcasing my talent every day, and becoming the best version of myself.”
Over 220 Career Appearances at Age 23
Despite his young age, Poku has already made more than 220 professional appearances, earning a reputation as one of the most exciting attacking prospects in the lower leagues.
“Playing a lot of games at a young age has been a big part of my journey,” he noted.
“Now it’s about learning this level quickly and expressing myself.”
Championship Experience and Bigger Ambitions
Poku is no stranger to the EFL Championship, having made 20 appearances for Peterborough during the 2019/20 season. Four years on, he is demanding more from himself.
“The difference now is the statistical side of my game,” he explained.
“I want to create more chances, get on the end of opportunities, and produce better numbers.”
Focus on Individual Growth and Team Success
As he prepares for life at Loftus Road, the Ghana international is focused on both personal development and helping QPR improve on last season’s performance.
“It’s a new experience and I’m really looking forward to it,” Poku said.
“I want to improve individually and help the team move forward. The main thing is to keep improving and see where it takes us.”
QPR CEO Welcomes Kwame Poku Signing
QPR CEO Christian Nourry praised the signing, highlighting the club’s recruitment strategy and player development focus.
“Kwame is a player our recruitment department has followed for over four years,” Nourry said.
“His decision to join us despite interest from European clubs and Championship teams with much larger budgets is a strong validation of the direction we are heading in.”
